Brennan, Dennis – Passed away peacefully at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich on August 18, 2016 surrounded by his family. Dennis Brennan was born on April 25, 1925 to James and Edith Brennan in Sheffield England. He grew up there and at the age of 17, attempted to join the Royal Navy. He was turned away because of his age, and was told to come back when he was older. He returned the very next day to the recruiting office and the officer in charge asked why he had come back.

Dennis replied, “You told me to come back when I was older, well I'm older today!” The officer just laughed and said, “alright, you're in”.

He served in WWII from 1942 to 1946. He was trained as a gunner and travelled the world on destroyers, a battleship and an aircraft carrier.

Two ships were badly crippled that he was assigned to over that time period. Dennis was taken to the hospital in Belgium, after the destroyer he was on was hit, yet after some time to recover from a back injury, he was able to return to duty, and was assigned to an aircraft carrier in the far east.

He married, became a foreman for ICI in Huddersfield, Yorkshire and then moved with his family to Goderich, Canada. He obtained employment with Dearborn Steel Tubing where he was a welder and later foreman until his retirement.

Dennis was actively involved with local soccer activities both as a player and referee. He enjoyed playing baseball as well. Cards at the legion, shuffleboard and choir were some of his favourite activities in later years.

Dennis is survived by his brother Jim, children Linda Brennan, Sandra Jackson (Paul),
and Stephen Brennan (Cindy), grandchildren Deborah Duncan, Karl Sudyk, Vikki McGuire, Bronwyn Jackson, Anthony Jackson, Andrew Jackson, Susanne Jackson, Wesley Brennan, Crystal-Ann Brennan-Yeo, John Brennan and 17 great grandchildren.

A family reunion was held this August with all of Dennis's descendents in attendance from across Canada, England and the U.S.A. It was a blessing that they were able to see grandpa before he passed.

A private family dinner is being held in Dennis's honour and in the fall, a Celebration of Life will take place.

At the request of Dennis, there will not be a funeral or visitation.

Memorial Donations are gratefully accepted to Landon's Wishing Wells, through the charity “Chalice”. (Dennis's grandson's effort to raise money for wells on the African Continent.) (Reference LWW2012).
