Diane Maize-Almey
April 26, 1963 – March 21, 2017
Daughter of John and Mary Maize, sister to Rick, Debbie (Robertson), Randy, Ron, Donna (Caldwell), Rob and Chris and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, grand- nieces and nephews. Beloved wife of Ian Almey, stepmother to his daughter Sarah, mother of Mike Dynes and his wife Sarah and “Grammie” of their children Storm and Brooke, passed away Tuesday evening from complications arising from a tragic car accident.
Growing up on the family farm near Dungannon, Ontario gave Diane many of the values she carried through her life; a love of horses and all animals, the independence and willingness to drive her friends places (at age 14), the knowledge that family unity is important and that friends are no different than families. Diane understood the value of a dollar, working for the Signal Star and a local pizza restaurant.
Diane graduated from GDCI in Goderich in 1981 and attended George Brown College in Toronto. After graduation, she moved to Newmarket and worked as a Child and Youth worker for the York Region School Board for over 20 years. After her father passed away, Diane returned to Huron County and continued her work for the Huron Perth Centre, Betamarsh, Inc. and finally with the Avon Maitland Schoolboard as a child and youth counselor at GDCI and FE Madill secondary schools.
It was here that Diane was most effective in our communities, working with local youth, both through the school system and in her private practice, “K.I.D.S” (Kids In Delicate Situations. She was instrumental in steering hundreds of local students from desperation towards a path to success.
Diane’s approach to the youth in her care was the same as with her family, her friends, and everyone she met, always ready to help out, selfless, good humored, caring, thoughtful and ALWAYS full of life. In a nutshell, she inspired those around her to want to be better people.
In 2010, Diane met the love of her life, Ian Almey and his 6 year old daughter, Sarah whom she welcomed as if she were her own. Ian and Diane were married in June of 2014. They lived next to the family farm where she grew up until her passing.
A come and go celebration of Diane’s life will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Monday, April 3rd between 2 and 5 pm. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been set up in her memory to honour deserving youth in our community who have shown the ability to overcome adversity and take the path to success. Donations will be accepted at the event or through the McCallum and Palla Funeral Home. (Please make cheques payable to "Ian Almey and Mike Dynes In Trust")
