Born August 16, 1931 in Toronto, Shirley went to meet her Saviour very peacefully on September 7, 2016. She was married on August 16, 1952 in Toronto and is survived by her husband Don of 64 years, her children Ernie and his wife Patti, Eleanor and her husband John, Elizabeth and her companion Ron. “Grandma Mc” was loved by her grandchildren Caleb, Joshua, Bethany and Aaron McMillan, Liam and Sheena O’Brien, Alicia Hutchison and Megan Flynn, Taylor and Landon Moffitt, and 5 great grandchildren Rylee, Emma, Kayla, Ashton and Lawson.

Shirley was an ardent book reader, and very active in vocal and instrumental music. Her passion for music began with childhood piano lessons. While attending Toronto's Bloor Collegiate she was a choir member and played clarinet in the orchestra. While residing in Toronto she was also a choir member with the College St. Baptist Church and Renforth Baptist Church.

In 1965 Shirley, Don and their three young children moved to Goderich where Shirley became a member of the Baptist and North Street Church Choirs, Craig Ellen Singers, Treble Singers and MacKay Choristers. Shirley was also very involved in the Goderich Little Theatre group for several years as an actress and stage manager. Her keen interest in instrumental music resulted in her becoming a charter member of the newly formed Goderich Laketown Band as well as the Foghorns Swing Band playing her alto saxophone.

In the 1970's Shirley played a vital role in the formation and success of the McMillan Family Band, which included writing the musical arrangements. Her hard work in this venture resulted in an invitation, which was accepted, from the American Evangelist, John Woodhouse, for the McMillan Family Band to join him on a three week tour of the British West Indies. This experience prompted the family, on returning home, to record two records with the proceeds from their sales going to missions.

A celebration of Shirley's full and meaningful life will take place at Lakeshore United Church Goderich, on Saturday September 17, 2016 at 11:00 am. Donations to Lakeshore United Church or to Ovarian Cancer Canada through their website or McCallum & Palla Funeral Home would be most appreciated.
